Hurry for every thing, none has time ‘to stay and stare’, all are in a race competing with one another wearing uneasiness on their face and none is found ever at ease. What a changed world is this? Peace is lacking on all fronts –be it a matter of domestic precincts or an atmosphere in some office or the other. Developments are a boon to the social fabric of the system but as every thing has its side effects in an adverse order, developments too have it in plenty. You switch on your TV to glance over important news but the hyper speed with which they are telecast makes it too cumbersome a process as before you catch a headline it disappears replaced by another in a sequence which too passes on before you are able to make some head or tail about it. Where are gone the days when people used to see a news channel at ease with comfiture grasping the contents wholesome. Developing economy has the characteristic of providing ultra modern facilities but at a cost, the peace of mind.

As if free sex is inevitably a dire need?

Call it a progressive society or people obsessed with the desire for sex, the world is changing fast to accommodate the interested couples in most liberal a way. A law is passed in California permitting sex in the campus and this has been done by Governor Jerry Brown to heed to the demand raised by University of California Students Association (USCA) besides certain other organisations. The law permits free sex between the consenting partners in the campus itself if theirs is a conscious decision with affirmative consent and that mentally they are a normal couple. A spokeswoman of California University spoke out her mind on ‘affirmative consent’ like this:

• The affirmative consent definition is one of many factors that is assessed when sexual violence is investigated and adjudicated on our campuses. But it is an extremely important one.

Isn’t it that such laws, if practiced by other countries, provide an alternative to otherwise a ghastly act like perpetrating a rape liberalising the same in public places? Back to the age of Adam and Eve, they could have felt more satisfied to know that there is no more any thing like a 'forbidden fruit' and that can now be relished well even quite publicly.

People are free to form their views and so is Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan to express himself on a topic like relations with girl friends in general or on a particular case. He was candid enough with a particular reference in his mind while expressing like this:

Raksha Bandhan–a pious bond of love between sisters and brothers:

It was Raksha Bandhan yesterday. A very very HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN. The shopping spree at a large scale was there much in advance in the market with the massive demand for rakhees and the dealers in it had a great day for themselves. In a materialistic world of today this great link of India’s heritage has its own significance standing much above many a trifles of the day with its own mark of a sacred sanctity. India being a solitary country all over the world vested with the credit of observing this festival at a mega scale since the early stages of Vedic era it has multitude of followers abroad mainly the Indians since settled there. The festival is not at all confined to the followers of Hinduism alone and I know several of the people belonging to other religions who love it and practice it too deeply impressed as they do feel with the serenity and security aspect of it. History has it that an Indian queen tied a rakhee to the then emperor of India Humayun and in return he solemnly offered her his life long protection and patronage to which promise he faithfully stuck. A rakhee knot got more strengthened as a symbol of security and faith with a great human touch since then. A sister and a brother apart, it brings people of all sects and shades together with a bond of love and affection. It has assumed much more of a significance in an atmosphere of insecurity to women that is frighteningly rampant in the society in a gigantic measure presently. The festival, let us wish, continues to act as a shield and a buckler to the women folk in particular in the country till eternity.

Identifying the poor:

One owes every sympathy to the poor not just as a ritual but in tangible terms as they are supposed to be a lot deserving help from those who can afford it but isn’t it a difficult job to identify them in the crowd of those who are no more really as such?. A mason who used to be in tatters earlier being paid a petty sum for his work joins his job now well dressed with a wrist watch on his hand and a mobile phone in his pocket and so does a rickshaw puller, and even a vegetable vendor. Thhelawalahs in the streets are the same thing. No more low paid they are earning enough now as against their earlier status of being treated as much poor a category in the society. Even a beggar thumps at your door with a heavy knock as if the alms are his claim now and no more a charity. If the beggar happens to be a woman she is more aggressive with an impression as if  she is chasing you like a hound not prepared to spare you unless you quite oblige her; if you don’t, she turns the one using abusive language against you. If you are an enthusiast on helping others on the pretext that they are the poor ones, you may have to go for a deep search to trace a real poor who is hungry and hankers for some food which task of identifying is awesomely onerous. Thanks to the change in social scenario.

Relevance of Rajbhavans in India:

When British ruled India they had secured best of luxury for themselves throughout the country and in league with that largest possible bungalows (Rajbhavans) sprang up in every state of India providing residential accommodation to the then Governors now known as Rajyapals and the one at Kolkata initially used to be the residence of Governor General (Viceroy) of India till such time the capital of the country was shifted to Delhi in 1912. The next bungalow built for Governor of Bombay (Mumbai) was more or less equally big and continues as such as on date followed by the ones in other state capitals. The grandeur of size and design in respect of the  residences constructed for Governors in newly formed states too in the country after independence are provided the same luxury as the older ones during British time. Rajbhavan of Mumbai was more in a lime light after there was a news published that it saved 1.35 lakh units of power compared to last year by using energy friendly devices and solar energy panels. Such a saving amply gives an estimate as to what could have been the total consumption of the power in the Rajbhavan premises. Isn’t it a wastage in a country like India where economic crisis continues perpetuating? True, heads of states need a symbolic status but there appears to be no relevance to go much beyond proportions on this count. It’s a case of slashing down the amount of luxury in a country like India extending the benefit so accrued to the other  sections of the society in the country who are badly hankering for some frugalest possible a spot called a house.

Don’t they deserve a thick thrashing like this?

This is a local news from Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh, India). Kanpur Electricity Supply Administration (KESA) where nothing moves unless you grease their palms sumptuously even for your most rightful routine consumer needs in relation to supply of electricity. Certain engineers and other junior staff from KESA were mercilessly beaten black and blue in two different localities of Kanpur the other day for the reason, as the people say, that they wanted to get obliged with illegal gratifications for attending to the jobs they were otherwise required to do free of any charge. Such incidents are more or less a routine as they occur with quick frequency. More surprising a feature is that despite such a thrashing they get every now and then as from the public they are virtually refusing to refrain themselves from resorting to such an evil practice as if they find it worth in view of the hefty sum of money they earn as bribe. Theirs is an organised gang where even an ordinary line man is able to fetch bribe money in thousands of rupees in a day and in fact it is such an undue earning that contributes miserably to the soaring prices in the local market. Normally the crude thrashing they get off and on from public is something to be discouraged by the people in a civilised society but the common men are left with no option as consumers but to go for it in the absence of any other relief available to them as from the governmental administration. If common  man’s plight is any consideration one feels inclined to endorse the treatment they are giving to the hefty money makers by illegitimate means with thrashing and more thrashing.

Sex with a dog or a bitch –any proof?

There is a story, a real one, of a judge who kept the judgement in a case pending for a long time unable as he found himself as to how go about the very proof part of body contents of the case. The case was a divorce petition filed by a man against his wife on the grounds of infidelity and that she was in the habit of having sex with a dog. The judge was satisfied and fully convinced on the grounds put up by the lawyer of the man concerned but there was nothing like any concrete proof. He was upset and had sleepless nights brooding all along as to how proceed further in the matter. His wife asked him why he was upset and the judge told him the whole story including the problem of the proof. His wife was able to give him a clude. She suggested ‘why not examine upper part of the belly of the petitioner’s wife. If there are paw marks of the dog on her belly, it would clearly indicate that she was having sex with the dog’. The very next day when the judge reached the court the first thing he did was to order necessary examination of the petitioners wife. It was done and the judge found that quite visibly there were the paw marks on her belly. The judge pronounced his verdict upholding the petitioner’s allegation. What happened the next was an amazement as the judge divorced his own wife immediately on reaching his home for obvious reasons that she too had paw marks on her belly which he had failed to notice earlier. Who knows how many females and equally males in the human society could be practicing such a bestiality as zoophiles?

Sewaks or agents of a corrupt feudal system?

There are many a people, particularly from amongst politicians, who boast of serving the society and in that context call themselves as ‘Sewak’ (one who serves the people). There is a local MLA who has gone a step further suffixing his name on his official letter as ‘SEWAK’. Most of them are hypocrites only as they hardly have any thing like a mission of service, they are mainly interested in their own welfare and the benefits. They apparently talk of being a Sewak, a servant, to the public, behaviourally their conduct is that of a feudal, dictating terms to aam admi (common man), and one who doesn’t fall in line with them is in for adverse situations managed against them. Their living style is lavish matching that of the lords with whatever paraphernalia is needed to add luxury to their life at their command. When chance comes their way, they themselves behave as hard core feudals, alternatively acting as agents to the total feudalistic system obtaining currently in the country. They virtually act as ‘dalals’ of the system including police.

A positive lead by temples to help uttarakhand rehabilitations:

There has been a hue and cry on the question as to why the very temples throughout the country which are so rich financially otherwise are not coming forward to suitably help the post devastation conditions in Uttarakhand. The temples so lagging behind till now include even those in Kedarnath and the other adjoining ones. Now there are gestures from the temples like Siddhvinayak in Mumbai joined by several others to contribute substantially towards the cause. They have announced the contribution of 5 crores for the purpose of which 25 lakhs has already been released. Most welcome a news in this connection is that a Muslim group in Mumbai has made an appeal that whatever funds are customarily spent on Iftar parties which festival is to commence from 10/11th of this month be diverted to the help of the families of the victims of the devastations in Uttarakhand. Such an initiative is highly commendable and sends a healthy message of communal harmony. Temples and mosques and also Gurudwaras have an immense wealth at their command and if a portion of it is diverted towards the rehabilitation process in the context of the devastatations, this serves a great cause of the humanity and deserves laurels.

Caste bias is outlawed in U.K.–A great victory for Dalits:

United Kingdom has since banned caste discrimination in the country which extends much awaited benefits to around four lakhs of dalits there. This has been most controversial an issue for a very long time in U.K. Caste prejudices discriminating between a person and a person are a curse for any society in any country all over the world. The measure so positively initiated in U.K. deserves laurels and is to be whole heartedly hailed by all and sundry at the global level. To legislate against caste discrimination in a country like U.K., otherwise known to be very conservative in certain matters traditionally in several quarters, was not an easy task but it was made easier because of necessary will on the part of the Lords. They deserve all praise for the move in so constructive a direction. Such an initiative warrants a whole hearted welcome all over the world prompting several other countries to follow the suit.

All around it is an atmosphere of merry making on account of Holi, the most significant festival, and people are all out to rejoice it. Soaring prices of different kinds of commodities are a great pinch for the common man, but quite unmindful of this negative factor there appears to be no reduction in enjoying the festival by sprinkling coloured water on each other. Some people even use muddy water for the purpose as a matter of some mischief while exchanging fun making. The colours of water including the muddy one are full of harmful chemicals causing damage to skin. Practitioners of herbal drugs have their own suggestions in the matter. They opine that instead of using chemical water the users can very well go for herbal water, the one that is prepared by using herbs as against chemicals. If one has to go by the advice of Dr. Hemant Mohan, the founder of Arogya Dhaam, his prescription is that herbal water is fully safe and in no way it causes any harm to the skin nor it results into any side effects to the users. Those who care for their skin, this is an advice worth following, and it is quite low cost wise.

What a gimmic is this?

People in India know what the law and order situation is obtaining in the country, and this includes traffic conditions too. While on road, any one can take any type of side ways, left, right or straight with any number of passengers in the vehicle. In Kanpur (U.P.,India), things are worst. Auto rickshaw drivers dictate terms and what they want, it prevails. They care three hoots for the traffic police. Traffic police is just helpless and they have no option but to ignore howsoever serious traffic crimes are committed except that they accept bribe in the broad day light. They are a corrupt lot as are their counterparts every where in the government. With a view to strictly implementing helmet disciple with a curb on three passengers on a bike or scooter, the local administration is issuing instructions to the local petrol dealers that those violating the rules as such be not supplied the fuel. What a funny proposition? Traffic rules are for the roads and not for the petrol stations. This means in simple terms that every thing can be managed well at the petrol pump and outside on the road the bikers and the scooterists, including also other categories of the vehicles, they are free to throw traffic rules to wind in any manner they like.

Now wrist mobiles!

Think of the days when there were no mobile phones. Now the things are just different and every body from a vendor to a big shop keeper all have a mobile phone, some a number of them. As if this was not adequate enough, the companies are now introducing mini mobile phones to decorate the wrist(s) of the users. This is being done from the point of view of facilitating those who prefer to remain on talking point even when they are eating are doing some other work where their hands are not free. After this newly developed device is available, such persons can keep talking or perusing their messages on their wrist mobile. They are supposed to look like a wrist watch viewable while engrossed in other activities with their hands not free. Thanks to technological developments which are giving the society some thing new or the other every now and then.

Worshipping a two headed snake for good luck!

There are people who have faith that their Gods and Goddesses never discriminate between what is good and what is bad, they go by the desire of their devotees only. They respond to their devotees irrespective of good doings or bad doings, is the belief. Criminals are known for serving their Deities sumptuously well before they proceed to commit a crime with a view to get success in their targeted task. It is difficult to comprehend as to how the Deity behaves when a criminal and his concerned victim are both the devotees of the Lord.

Quite a few days back, as brought out by the media, a gang of robbers in Farrukhabad (India) was busted by the local police. On search, the police found a two headed snake from their possession. The snake known as a sand boa which is called a domuha saanp (two headed snake) in the rural areas is non poisonous but has the reputation of securing success to its devotees if served well by them. The criminals kept it with them on a regular basis and worshipped it before launching their targeted act with the faith that it will elicit them success. Such a snake they purchase from snake charmers at a high price. Criminals are criminals after all and for them any thing is good that serves their purpose including the heinous acts like loot and murder they commit, and so are Gods, including species like a snake, who, as they think, fall in line with them with their beck and call, whenever so needed. Practicing dogmatism has no end in the society we have.

Dearth of vultures–Problem for Parsees on their death rites!

The Parsees in India and elsewhere have zoroastrian faith according to which when some one dies in their family, the dead body of the person concerned is placed in the open to be consumed by vultures, and this they think is the best way of performing the death ritual. Such a ritual is called by them as ‘Tower of Silence’. There is now an environmental problem coming in their way of doing it. The vultures in states like Gujarat and Mumbai in India, where Parsees are in a bigger measure of population, are facing acute shortage of vultures whose number is dwindling day by day. This results into dead body of an individual particular Parsee family lying in the open for several days remaining unconsumed. As an alternative to this problem, the Parsees are now opting for other measures like cremation and burial of the dead body instead of dropping it in the open with emission of a bad smell for a longer time. Some hard necked orthodox Parsee families are opposed to it but majority of them are now going for burial and cremation as an option.

Story of a poor man who suffered from epilepsy:

A poor man in a tattered dress, a fragile figure and a shrunken look knocked the gate of my house some time back. My domestic helper called him in to me in my office. He had some pictures of movie stars and others in a small packet in his hand which were meant for a sale each costing Rs.3/-. He requested me to purchase one or two of them if not more. I was not interested, but I did develop an anxiety to know about his condition as he looked so disturbed and panicky. He told me:

“I lost my wife a few years back and was living with my son who abandoned me for the reason that I am a nuisance to him and his own family, suffer as I do from attacks of epilepsy every now and then. I was left with no option but to resort to begging, which my conscience didn’t permit me to do. A relative of mine helped giving me Rs.50/- out of which I bought some pictures from the road side sellers. I was eagerly waiting for some customer to buy pictures from me, but at the same time I had a fit of epilepsy falling down helplessly. When I was struggling with  my disease, some one grabbed my packet containing the pictures and disappeared. The road side seller from whom I had purchased the pictures earlier was kind enough to lend me 10 pictures at the rate of Rs.2/- each which I want to sell at the rate of Rs.3/-. This will save me some ten rupees by which I can buy some bananas at least to eat as I didn’t have any food for the last 2 days.”

I did not buy his pictures telling him to sell them some where else. I offered him food and gave Rs.100/ as a token of some help. I gave him some clothes also. All this brought a smile on his tearful face and I too felt much satiated that I could share his misery at least to a meagre extent. The thought that still haunts me is that there could be numerous such instances where the people in our country are suffering so helplessly like this with no body to worry for them, neither family, nor society, nor even the government.

A positive move on curbing eve teasing:

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (India) deserves thanks for initiating certain measures directed to curbing the ever continuing menace of eve teasing. A new telephone line 1090 named as Woman Power Line has since been introduced to facilitate contact by the complainants immediately the moment they are given an unwanted call by some teaser. This call shall be attended by a woman staff who will be supposed to pursue the matter till it is given a finality by suitably punishing the caller concerned. The important feature of this service is that the identity of the girl or a woman concerned will not be disclosed publicly. Diwali in India is followed by Bhaiya Dweej when girls and women in a large number have to move from one place to another to perform the teeka ritual by putting a tilak on the forehead of their brothers. Taking advantage of the festival, the teasers find it much feasible to target their victims. This service is supposed to be quite useful in handling mainly the ugly telephone calls. This shall be much better if similar service is provided to handle the eve teasing in the streets, the markets, the colleges or universities in general, where such a ugly menace is more common.

The poor and the destitute–How do they celebrate their festivals?

Festivals are festivals for every body –be they the poor, the destitute or the rich ones. Rich ones obviously can well afford celebrating their festivals in a lavish measure and sumptuously. On the other hand, those who are poor just can’t afford doing so because of their limited means or no means at all, particularly in the atmosphere of currently soaring prices in the markets. They too hanker for buying several things like clothes for the family, utensils on dhan teras, diwali and bhaiyya dweej, toys, patakhas and sweets for the children, but on all these items they have only to take a deep sigh, or frugally manage certain limited items by resorting to some borrowings from their friends and relations, a too embarrassing a task for any one. It was Diwali yesterday and Chhoti Diwali a day before, and what an amount of embarrassment they might have undergone amongst the members of their families and relatives on both these occasions, is a plight, one can easily understand. I only wish that some day the gulf of disparity between the rich and the poor gets mitigated at least to some extent extending the poor and the destitute some relief and solace.

Dress code–Sonia Gandhi style:

While addressing the convocation of National Institute of Fashion Technology at Rae Bareli (India) the other day, Sonia Gandhi laid emphasis on simple dress as against  overdone and over-embellished ones. Her tune and tenor was that of matching with Indian culture. One should look clean and elegant, but there should be no overdoing on that count to the extent that the people, particularly women, hardly wear any thing to fully cover their bodies. Sonia Gandhi, just like Indira Gandhi, always is neatly dressed herself, and the message so given by her is that of a modest and graceful an order. In fact the dress choice in currency these days is that of too meagre a coverage to the whole figure of a woman or girl, which at times borders a ridiculous look and that hardly fits into the traditional culture of the country. Alright that one should be neatly dressed looking elegant, but this is not supposed to suppress the very grace part of it.
