Inaugurated by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, a BJP M.P., the other day in Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh, India), a medical event took place where doctors of eminence participated in debate on medicinal issues. Dr. P.K. Dalal of King George Medical University, Lucknow, opined that depression is twice as common among women than men. Almost all the doctors in the meet were of an unanimous view that self medication is always hazarduous and the patients have to refrain from so doing. The very factor as to why tendency towards depression is more in the case of women compared to men was, however, not discussed with an adequate elaboration shedding necessary light on the malady. Emotionally women tend to be hyper sensitive and that is one reason why they take even trivial most issues more seriously which in turn becomes the cause for a perpetual sort of strain and tension resulting into depression after a certain gap of time. This is an area which needs serious attention of those who are running the administration of health and medicines and requires to be given a top priority peremptorily.

Easy money or money earned nefariously:
Never easy it is to earn money. Even a beggar has to put in hard labour to earn whatever little he fetches. Islam prescribes that it is haram to earn any money without putting in necessary labour for it and so do the other religions too to forbid any mode of earning unless there are due efforts made for the purpose involving some amount of labour or the other. But human tendency all over the world is to follow only those portions of religious sermons that suit them and are compatible to their desires. What is followed in practice is securing easy money some way or the other not necessarily involving much of physical labour. Black money comprises of such earnings accumulated through corrupt practices. Even small traders resort to such a mode of earnings. The government of India recently announced about 35% of relaxations in number of medicines but you go to any medical store they are not prepared to reduce the prices on the pretext of no official information yet received by them. They are the same persons who forthwith implement such decisions the moment they are announced or published in the news papers without waiting for any official information if the prices are raised. Same thing is done by the dealers in petrol and diesel followed by traders in other house hold essentials including road side thhelawalas. Call it easy money but in actual terms it is black money remaining unaccounted for and majority of business people in India, big or small, flourish on it.

Whom to rely upon?
The well known Yog Guru Baba Remdev is regarded by his disciples and even others as a crusader against corruption and black money in India. It is a different matter that he himself is running an empire of business in indigenous medicines and is involved in several cases against him being investigated by CBI and various other agencies in the country. He is a Yogi turned politician now practicing more of politics than Yoga. There are many a controversies surrounding him in relation to his products as from Patanjali. One of the latest products from the Patanjali medical centre is a Chawanprash with composition of 51 herbs as per various ads released in relation to that. A consumer checked the very label of the Chawanprash container and there he found the mention of only 37 herbs. Since the market is flooded with the new brand as such it just can’t be construed to be an omission and if it was something deliberate it amounts to a manipulation bordering a fraud. People trust Baba Ramdev but if he too is found involved in any malicious deal, the very question that arises is as to who could be the people to be trusted upon. The matter is under investigation and the truth will come out after it is finalised.

Certain tit bits against monsoon diseases:
A sort of hurricane showers of monsoon are settling down now but that is adversely followed by different kinds of ailments known as monsoon diseases. There is a general tendency on the part of the people that they don’t bother at the initial stage of an ailment and when it aggravates they have no option but to rush to some doctor or the other. Some minor precautions at the outset count more and with them it is normally possible to keep the ailments at bay. The only thing is that the precautions have to be resorted to before it gets too late. A few of such precautions required to be adhered to are like this:
- Avoid sleeping during day hours.
- There should be no over exertion.
- Surroundings to be kept dry and clean.
- Don’t go to AC room immediately after taking bath.
- Avoid eating uncooked food and salads.
- Water intake should be in plenty.
- A clean and cool glass of water should be taken before going to sleep in the night.
- Body temperature to be kept warm as low temperature is vulnerable to virus.
This one is not an exhaustive list of precautions as they are numerous but can serve the purpose to a good extent if applied with a discipline.

On obesity:
Obesity is much worse than a curse if not taken care of timely. The root cause behind several ailments is only obesity. To inculcate necessary awareness on obesity, there are obesity days observed in different places. In fact it is not enough to observe any particular day as such as the need is more on the part of the individuals concerned themselves to include it in their discipline of routines. It is diabetes, blood pressure, heart problems or several other ailments affecting most adversely the whole body system, behind every thing in most of the cases it is obesity which works as a deterrent negatively damaging different physical organs. If obesity is duly checked, it is easy and feasible to control other organs in the body in tact. Some normal level exercises play much of a role in keeping obesity under control. Walking and Yoga are the most convenient modes of physical exercise, and resorting to them is not a difficult task. Remedy lies more in the hands of the persons concerned than medicinal treatment given by the doctors. With necessary will, any individual can adopt the regimen of moderate exercise and this duly takes care of the obesity.

Do more of medical tests really ensure a better health?
Go for regular medical check-ups as a routine is the advice all the doctors unfailingly give to their patients. Looks alright apparently, but if the study conducted by Cochrane review is to be taken on its face value, it is not necessary, as the result, more or less, in all the cases is the same. Those who go for regular medical check-ups, and those who don’t hardly make any difference the review so made indicates. This is somewhat strange in the sense that after all check-ups are the ones which candidly reveal the deficiencies and the defects in the body system enabling the concerned patients to feel alarmed if there is some major health problem with them. If the patients opt for not going to get themselves medically checked, they are just unable to know as to what sort of a medical problem they are suffering from. It is accordingly safer for every body, particularly those in an advancing age bracket, to ensure a regular medical check-up from the health point of view.

Capping price on essential drugs:
It’s a good news! The Government of India has since taken a decision to put a price cap on essential medicines in the country. This good step is reportedly the first one of the kind in India. The step so taken is supposed to benefit several thousands of the patients in the country like those suffering from AIDS, cancer, besides giving relief to those who use drugs for TB, pain killers, sedatives, lipid lowering agents and steroids. The decision prescribes necessary maximum as a retail price of the respective drugs at the level of the consumers. The drugs so earmarked are being brought under the control of DPCO (Drug Price Control Oder) after which no dealers shall be permitted to charge any extra amount beyond what is fixed by the government as retail price. The essential drugs so covered under the scheme are the ones needed most by the patients in respective areas. Serious ailments require heavy expenditure on different other items besides medication and this becomes difficult for the patients to afford it. If they can get atleast the relaxation so prescribed by the government in retail prices of the drugs, this is certainly a big relief to them. There are establishments which give their employees full or part reimbursement of their expenses on medicines, but there are many who have no such practice, and it obviously causes enormous difficulties to the patients. In fact the way the soaring prices in general are affecting the people in the country, what the government is supposed to do is to apply necessary control on other essential commodities, say like food items, besides the drugs, and this shall be the step to extend relief to the people in general.

Why yoga should be practiced as a routine?
Gaining momentum every day Yoga is very much a way of life now. Thanks to Baba Ramdeo who has most successfully succeeded in rejuvenating the ancient oriental vedic science in most methodical an order. This science was very much there since ages but it was not that much in practice earlier for the reason that necessary awareness on that count was not there. What is so distinctly there in this science which makes it much different compared to several other medical therapies is the question. Yoga is not just a parallel mode of medical treatment, more than that the very approach of it is compatible in a bigger measure usage wise and any person irrespective of age and financial status can practice it. Healthy blood circulation is a key factor in the whole body system and different kriyas and asanas prescribed in yoga play a major role in keeping it intact and in order. This considerably takes care of various viruses keeping the body fit enough to combat many an ailments. Moreover, there are no side effects of yoga exercises and the drugs it prescribes as against allopathic treatment which is just the contrary causing different complications. There is of course no match to innovative developments so made in medical science in allopathy, yoga in no measure lags behind in reviving and developing various methodologies with orientation of self medical discipline for both who are ailing and who are healthy otherwise.

Monkeys are wiser than humans:
Humans were originally monkeys only, it is said. This is, however, a different question that if transformation like this occurred how come all the monkeys were not converted as humans and what kind of the specie are the left overs fully alive as on date and still fostering. Whatever it is but the fact remains that monkeys are in no way lagging behind the humans in the matters of intelligence, nay they are rather more intelligent in certain respects. One of my maternal uncles namely Manoram Dixit, an Ayurvedic practitioner who possessed enormous inquisitiveness for study on animals, plants and herbs happened to be in dense forest adjoining Rishikesh roaming here and there in pursuit of his research work. He came across a herd of monkeys gleefully hopping and playing amongst themselves. All of sudden a child monkey from amongst them fell upon a small plant in the shrubs. Writhing with unbearable pain it started crying looking like it was to collapse. Seeing this an elder monkey rushed to another plant just by the side of the one the touch of which was the cause of the whole problem for the child monkey. Snatching a cluster of leaves from the plant he forcefully rubbed them on the body of the child monkey and the process so applied gave it an instant relief. It was so surprising. In reply to the queries raised by my uncle the locals told him that the plant in question always develops as a twin by nature like one is positive or plus and the other one is negative or minus and the monkeys are aware of it as to which leaves of which plant are to be applied to undo the trouble so caused by one of the twins. There is nothing like any laboratory available to the monkeys for investigations but their own sense and instinct bestowed upon them by nature are enough to guide them as to what has to be done where to combat a trouble.

Ranbaxy in new hands
Now that India's largest pharmaceutical company is sold to Japan's Daiichi Sankyo for $4.6 billion it is head for much bigger dimensions in pharmaceuticals business. Daiichi Sankyo is already third biggest drug maker and acquiring Ranbaxy to its fold is sure to develop much more a commanding position in the market of pharmaceuticals. There are already positive fluctuations in share market for Ranbaxy and after the deal gets fully settled there are quite chances that it will stablise to the advantage of the community. More importantly significant move on their part is that they are taking it as a mission to produce cheaper and moderately priced drugs for those who can't afford costly medicines. Hopefully they succeed in their mission.
