In a corruption laden society like we have there are troubles emerging at every step and no consumer can help coming out of them howsoever best he tries. Financed by State Bank of India I own a house in State Bank Colony, Ratanlal Nagar, Kanpur with an electric meter for the last more than three decades. Payments of the relative electricity bills paid regularly without fail there was not even an exception ever on that count. Only some time back it was noticed that the meter reading had gone much low with the relative bill unusually showing too small an amount. Necessary complaint was lodged with the KESCO (Kanpur Electricity Supply Co.Ltd) immediately but there was no action taken by them. When the matter was followed up further they got irritated and a team of theirs barged into my house trying to find some fault or the other attributing the same as if some thing wrong was there at my end itself. Without hearing my family members in the matter they hurriedly prepared a bill for Rs.36,000/ as one time settlement besides the cost of new meter to be paid separately. Necessary cheque had to be given to them of course without prejudice to our version of the explanation.They in fact wanted some gratification (obviously illegal) in terms of money which was denied to them point blank with the result that a few days later they called again raising a further demand of Rs.86,000/by way of arrears as they said. Why arrears is the question as there was already a one time settlement. The moot point remains that all this was happening as they were not obliged with the payment they wanted by way of necessary bribe, a routine culture as they take it. I realise that the job could have been much easier if they were suitably obliged which of course was not done as a matter of conviction. In a country like ours one has to suffer and pay the price for whatever are his convictions.

It is possible now that one can have his/ her own personal postal stamps. There are people who have a deep craze for postal stamps indulging themselves in their huge collections and for them it is certainly a good news as pronounced by the postal authorities in India. The stamp so envisaged has to be in two parts –one containing the picture of some celebrity, Taj Mahal, Panchtantra, train, aircraft or some thing else as decided by the Government from time to time and the other with the photograph of the person who gets himself/ herself duly registered for the purpose with an amount of Rs.500/ including Rs.100/ as registration fee for a block of 12 photographs. There is nothing like any upper limit for the purpose. The scheme thus covers even a common man and is no more confined alone to dignitaries or other logos of national importance.

Geetanjali by Rabindranath Tagore became a controversy and surprisingly it happened in a country like Russia. The issue raised was that it was pro terrorism. Strange! The book that won a Nobel Prize to Tagore is by and large a devotional work and no where it denotes any note of terror. It quite softly deals with human behaviour and approach in the context of routine dealings. In a way it is quite devotional a work inspiring people to submit to God, the Almighty. A line from the book reading as “…forgive my languor O! Lord if ever I lag behind” is enough to amply reveal the very spirit of it and it is very difficult to understand the reasons behind all this fuss.

Change is the law of nature and so is it in the case of a society or a community. Every thing changes with the passage of time. There was a time when traders/ dealers behaved in the then obtaining orthodox an order posing themselves as if they were somewhat superior to their customers. They hardly realised that it were the customers who in the real sense were their source of business. If there were no customers there was nothing like any transactional turnover and if such a turnover was not there their very business was a flop. Behaviourally too they virtually caught hold of them whenever some customer(s) called on them in their shops for some purchase or the other instead of softly mobilising them for necessary deal. Things are changed and customers are now dealt with with dignity and grace with the result that all kind of business in the market is flourishing by leaps and bounds. Even the big bosses belonging to different corporate undertakings treat a smallest possible customer in the streets as their very important person. For any developing economy better customer relations are after all a key note.

Does Anna Hazare stand confused?

Recognised by many as another Gandhi, Anna Hazare created history when he launched a scathing attack against the powers that be vigorously raising a demand that a separate law be enacted to curb corruption in the country. He observed fast unto death which was only withdrawn after the Government of India affirmatively nodded their head to consider the demand in a positive measure. The fast continued for nearly two weeks. Anna became a wave and his was a house hold name throughout the country. His movement gave a sigh of relief to 125 crores Indians who found a ray of hope in it for eradication of corruption that was so giganticly rampant in the country as a whole but the sequence of events which followed led the people think as if their hopes were dwindling. It was not only for the reasons that the ruling collision at the centre with Congress as a major partner went back on their assurance to consider Anna’s demands in a positive manner and that they rather adopted aggressive postures detrimental to Anna’s mission, the other reasons were the differences of opinion emerging amongst the the members of the team Anna themselves and conflicting statements made by them including Anna himself. Anna justified slapping on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar by some young man but soon after retracted condemning the attack. He called the people in the government as Chor (thieves). He said ‘choron ko thappad maro’ (slap those who are thieves). There is literally nothing wrong in such versions of statements but language wise they do not befit a Gandhian like Anna is. Anna has been postponing his plans to more aggressively launch a further movement on some pretext like health or the other. Very often he looks to be double minded and possibly confused in regard to his movement plans. A definite mind and not a confused one is the key note for any struggle or movement and one is supposed to be well behaved without compromising his view point to pursue his mission.

Back long enough I had stopped blogging for the reason that it looked to be somewhat cumbersome to me and that it didn’t prove remunerative enough to keep me attracted to it. Realising later that if the venture was not that much result oriented it was none else but myself to blame as possibly I was not able to spare necessary amount of time required for the purpose. Looking back to my association with Socialspark with whom I had developed a close relationship in course of my dealings with them, I felt within myself as if it was a rapport much worth continuing. It formed some amount of temptation in me which I felt I was unable to resist, hence this resumption. Resuming the task undoubtedly falls in the midst of several complicated formalities but they are after all an integral part of any challenge that is undertaken.Thanks to Socialspark and also Google whose platform I have been using for my blogs.

Pensioners in State Bank of India

Of all the public sector organisations in India State Bank is the oldest one where pension to the employees was introduced right during the days it used to be called Bank of Calcutta established on 2nd June in 1806 which was later renamed as Bank of Bengal on 2nd January’ 1809 to form Imperial Bank of India subsequently on 27th January’1921. Employees in this Bank had the triple advantage of Pension, Provident Fund and gratuity. Now such benefits are a general feature in almost all the banks throughout the country. Work force in State Bank now lags behind several other organisations including non commercial ones like Central Government employees. There are undertakings like Life Insurance Corporation of India which are much better placed with a liberalised calculation of pension to suit its retirees. Such a calculation is not allowed to be applied to State Bank employees despite persistent demands raised on that count by the respective unions. Besides the currently serving employees union namely All India State Bank of India Staff Federation and All India State Bank of India Officers Federation there is another union exclusively for the retired employees/ officers to look after the interests of the retirees. None is able to deliver necessary goods and the retirees from State Bank are left in a lurch compelled to lead a miserable life in every day growing prices of essential commodities and they find themselves just helpless to manage necessary sustentation for themselves and their families with the meagre amount they get by way of pension. In fact the retirees are themselves to blame in many ways on this count as they lack much behind in the matter of necessary efforts in this context and they merely look to their respective unions as silent spectators.

The leaders, nay the past leaders, of All India State Bank of India Staff Federaton met at Kolkata on 7th and 8th January. In a way it was the galaxy of stalwarts who turned up to the venue from nook and corner of the country. The participants jubilantly bubbled with a glow of enthusiasm like they were not the ones who called it a day to hectic organisational activities much earlier but younsters knowing no fatigue. Thanks to Sankareswar Dutta joined by Prafulla Patnaik who successfully harnessed themselves to the gigantic task of organising the event like they maidenly did in arranging its predecessor meet in November'2010 at Puri. Dexterously monitored by the joint convenors Sankareswar Dutta and Prafullo Kumar Patnaik, the event was hosted by State Bank of India Staff Association, Bengal Circle, and most pivotal a role in the matter was played by its General Secretary Siddhartha Khan, a man of down to earth simplicity sans any kind of reservations. Sankareswar Dutta introduced him to the gathering as the one in the offing as a potential leader of the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation some day. Replying to a question by one of the participants, Siddhartha Khan replied '...no son is supposed to forget his father and so are we to always adore our fore fathers in the leadership'. Deliberations wise, number of speakers participated notably Venugopal Reddy, SP Raman, Shiv Janam Pandey, KK Bandlish and also Siddhartha Khan representing his local team of SBISA. Chapal Ghosh introduced to the gathering his locally formed forum meant for retirees from State Bank which however could not be entertained as it was something in generality and not compatible to the purpose of the forum in session. It was resolved to name the forum as United Forum of Former Council Members of All India SBI Staff Federation.
The event ofcourse lacked in establishing a definite direction in the matter of cogently identifiable a purpose and goal to determine whether this congregation of the retiree leaders had to remain confined to an ashirvad goshthi or they could secure more meaningful a capability to still play a tangibly viewable role contributing their might towards some service to the workers.

Safe it is as it is said to record relevant materials online but it doesn’t hold good always. I find myself at a loss to know that number of blog sites I created with different IDs are no more available online as they are either just untraceable or are put to an end by the host sites themselves reasons of which are not known to me except that there was no operations in the accounts for quite a long time. Possibly necessary record maintained off line elsewhere in a manual order is more safe. In any case I feel so disheartened at the experience.

Monday, January 03, 2011: Too chilly a weather it is for the last few days looking like things are freezing all around. Chilly winds on date remind me of the weather as it stood just a year back when people in SBISA particularly led by Vijai Awasthi and Anil Jauhary celebrated the day as my Platinum Jubilee based on official record of my birth day i.e. 2nd January’1935 at Farrukhabad. Instead of 2nd January it was observed on the 3rd January to suit the convenience of the organizers and the participants. Despite very bad a weather the event was attended by the people at a very large scale. I feel alright healh wise in the new year. There are ofcourse certain instances in a way striking a note on my advancing age. This morning while heading towards dining table to pick up the news papers of date I felt I was badly oblivious of my surroundings and didn’t at all notice that Disha, my daughter inlaw, was sitting there going through the news papers. This I could notice only when I got too close to her. A tendency of getting unduly suspicious on health points as I have I took it as some thing like a derailed mind. I quite know that it was the case of usual mental slips very common in an individual’s routine but some where there is a lurking thought as if the slip was an outcome of my advancing age which may not be a factual state of my health conditions and in no way it carries any alarming signal relating to my age as it stands on date.

Friday, December 31, 2010: It’s the year end now like it always happens –the year like any thing in the universe comes like a child and passes off like an old person as if it is just a routine ritual in the hands of the Nature. Nothing stays till eternity. On an average the year 2010 has been a better one except that I had to continuously offer resistance against some ailment or the other. The reason as to why I develop like my whole body system sinking with too vague an uneasiness quite often continues to be undiagnosed. My doctors only failed on that count. This ailment struck me like a bout of attack day before when I was on my usual walk in Shriram Park when it became a horrible task for me to drive home back and this was a period I had to count moment by moment. My will power helped me to some how reach Tapovan back. I had no option but to resort to ‘Placida’, a tablet I had stopped taking nearly a week back as an experiment. I resumed it since yesterday morning and after the second doze of it today I find some improvement now but, most intriguing a question as it is, how long I can depend on it. It may after all have its own side effects. My doctor for the purpose Vishal Chopra says in his usual style of vagueness that I can take it safely on a regular footing. Bachhey continues to suffer from low blood pressure and for this too the doctors are helpless to suggest any effective remedy. I continue feeling badly disturbed. On financial stringency on domestic needs I failed to secure any alternative remedy on this count this year too but could manage the needs some how. Yoga has helped me a lot to keep my other physical faculties intact till now enabling me to still look forward with confidence to a better tomorrow. I don’t know how and to what extent this optimism of mine will hold good in the new year starting from the mid night today.
N.B. The usual site for 'mydiary' is my blog 'Scenario' where operations are restricted by the Google, hence the venue is shifted to this blog 'Destination' ofcourse as a measure of trial. I have yet to take a final decision in the matter.

Far from the madding crowd of Kolkata there is a hospital in the pleasant rural surroundings of Gobrapota in Nadia district established and run by Suvendu Memorial Seva Pratisthan/ Suvendu Memorial Trust. The hospital is aimed at providing service to the poor and the people in the low income group with an exclusive concentration on ensuring that no needy a person goes unattended. There is of course no dearth of hospitals and other medical units in the country particularly in a nearby city like Kolkata but those serving the people in a committed order with a missionary approach are only few and this hospital is an exception in the category of service to the poor, the needy, the ones who can't afford a big cost. True, all can't be Mother Teresa in serving the humanity but even a drop counts for the ocean and this hospital certainly forms a powerful drop in the direction of service to the people, poors in particular. The hospital is fully equipped with necessary utility medical units for all types of patients on a conveniently affordable cost like Rural Health Centre, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Eye Care besides Eye Screening Camps, Eye Bank. Project on Childhood Blindness, as already approved by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, is actively in hand and may assume a full shape in days to come. There are also various health programmes organized by the hospital free of cost from time to time especially keeping in mind the people otherwise suffering from affordability constraint.
The man behind this missionary project playing most pivotal a role is Sankareswar Dutta, the Managing Trustee of Suvendu Memorial Trust. A retiree from State Bank of India, he is a renowned Trade Union leader and a Social Worker. He started the Trust in the fond memory of his late son Suvendu. To form the initial financial resource for the Trust he had to use the superannuation proceeds he got on his retirement from the Bank. He is a work alcoholic committedly adhering to the task he undertakes. Moreover a father in him is engrossed twenty four hours a day to secure a due monumental significance for his late son by making it possible that the project does flourish to the required heights. Hard work and a strong will is a combination unfailingly capable of eliciting the desired results. Such a combination is sure to further accelerate the service to the people in a bigger measure.

Tiger, the king of forest, is now likely to face extinction in view of the large scale poaching of which they are the victims. Poachers kill them for their business and shikaris shoot them down for their pleasure ignoring the appeals from several quarters to refrain from so doing. As media report says their number is reduced to near nullity as their total strength is now no more than 4100+ in our country. The killers forget that tigers not only contribute much towards ecological balance on earth, they too have a right to live like humans do. Certain species who used to be there on earth thousands of years back have gone into oblivion with their extinction and if the speed with which the tigers are killed presently

Nothing wrong in seeking alms. The poors and the needy otherwise do it. It is considered to be a pious gesture in India to offer alms. Infact there are certain fixed days and festivals in India when alms are offered and ladies in the family will not eat any thing unless they observe this ritual. With time changing so fast the beggars too have changed their modus operandi. Instead of being submissive as it used to be earlier they are now so much aggressive on their job. They will robustly knock at the door and continue clamouring unless some one from the family turns up to meet their indent specifically pronounced in terms of cereals and cash. If their demand is not met they abruptly start cursing the family even using abusive language. Many a persons meet their demand not as a pious gesture but to avoid nuisance. They move in gangs majority being that of girls. Girls talking in abusive language looks so nasty.The element of a noble gesture in offering alms is totally lost and it has assumed a shape that the beggars are in most of the cases obliged by the people to get rid of a nuisance.

It is for years that I have been writing blog posts yet it appears I am a novice in the field and have to go a long way to claim dexterity in the job. I saw her falling unconscious

Trembling and gasping for breath she fell unconscious and this happened on the road in front of my house. She was too old a woman fragile and weak. Seeing this from the roof top of my house I rushed to her and so did a few passersby. She was given some water to drink and was able to partly regain her consciousness. Given some biscuits to eat she was somewhat normal. When asked as to where her house is with a view to escort her back to her place her answer was that she has no place to go back as she was driven out of her house by her family members only including her sons. What was her crime? Nothing but that she was treated as an obstruction in their private comforts. She was some how persuaded to be escorted back to her house and no body knows as to how she might have been treated by her family members after the her escorters returned. There is no parallel to a mother in taking care of her children but when children grow to their adulthood they hardly bother for her, they rather look at her with an amount of disdain to the extent of driving her out of her home. I asked her as to why she is forgetting that the place which she was talking about was not the one without men, women, children living there for ages undergoing all sorts of hardships in the absence of basic amenities. How come, I asked her, that they are the people living there with their families with such a difficult mode of life for generations and you look to be the one who found spending even a few hours so tortuous. If those leading a comfortable life style start thinking even a bit about those who are living in difficult situations they may have no reasons to grumble for themselves.

A recent case is that of a woman, Narayani by name, who unfortunately became a widow within three months of her marriage was dragged out of home and abandoned by her inlaws immediately after death of her husband after which she had no option but to take shelter with her parents. Her parents took care of her, saw to it that she was given proper education and that they also managed her employment on a good salary. After serving her employment for quite some time she died leaving considerable amount of her savings besides provident fund. The Hon'ble court delivered their judgement in favour of the inlaws of the woman placing both the savings and the provident fund at their disposal depriving the parents of the same. What a law? The family that took care of the woman spending lot of amount on her and her education was no consideration for the Court, they rather found it more legal to extend the advantage of her savings and superannuation benefits to her inlaws who callously threw her out of the house. Looks like they are rewarded by the Law for their misdeed.

It was a news when Kalyan Singh, ex Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, denied his involvement in any manner in demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya claiming instead that he was all along for the minority community of muslims and that he can't think of doing any thing that hurts their feelings. Factually how deeply he was involved in demolition is no secret to any one. It is a different matter that he can come out with any amount of statements contradicting the same for political reasons and vested interest. He is not alone of the type as he is now joined by another political stalwart Uma Bharti, ex Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, who claims a total ignorance of any demolition plan to her knowledge. She was the one who travelled all the way from Chitrakoot to Ayodhya disguising herself as an ordinary visitor for which purpose she even got her head shaven for the fear of getting recognized by the people who otherwise knew her so well. That time it was a holy mission for her to see Ram Mandir where the Babri Masjid was and the instant turn taken by her only shows that the politicians hardly have any rules or ethics to follow on a permanent footing. A poor woman struggling to save her cancer patient husband in a hospital locally at Kanpur (U.P.) sold out all that she had including her mangalsutra , a precious most thing for ladies in India, but no treatment worked. It has been too hot in North India crossing the temperature of 44 but a big respite was there when some rains occurred yesterday bringing down the temperature to a comfortable level. Although the rains were not as such but in the form of drizzles only, continue as they did for quite some time, they proved capable of generating a cool atmosphere all around. The weather experts say that such untimely rains, small or otherwise, are not good for the crop and are likely to prove detrimental to the interest of farmers. Notwithstanding this, the small drizzles have certainly given quite a relief to the people who have been suffering so much on account of scorching sun and sweltering heat for the last several days. The profile of a blogger friend of mine says that she writes on any thing under the Sun. As the initial impression at the outset I thought she must be a genius otherwise how could it be possible for some one to write on any thing under the Sun -from an insect to giant creatures, from a rivulet to big ocean, from hillocks to mountains and from all types of creepers to monsters. Modernization being in full swing there are new methods for every thing including modus operandi on protests. Showing shoes or throwing them on the face of the target dates back to olden days but then it was more symbolic than real as against now when the practice is gaining much popularity and is getting rampant every where without any discrimination in selecting the target. Be it a VVIP, VIP, Celebrity or any one for that purpose all are targeted in a common order with the only difference that a commoner slapped with shoes in the street elicits no coverage in the media channels as against the dignitaries whose news spreads like a wild fire with media blasting it beyond proportions. After much talked about shoe was thrown on George Bush, the then President of America, at Baghdad, looks like it set a pattern for the protesters as most convenient a method to express resentment. In India it was tried on P.Chidambaram, the Home Minister of the country in his press conference by a journalist followed by similar attempt against Navin Jindal, a Member of Parliament. As if this was not the end of it, a chappal was thrown aiming L.K. Advani, the ex Home Minister and leader of opposition in Parliament. All the attackers pardoned by their victims, they could well realize that their move was safe and problem free plus getting noticed sumptuously every where. Taking situations on their face value is a normal tendency for any person remaining ignorant of the modifications that may work as an alternative. Call it lethargy or by any other name, the life in the case of persons with such a tendency causes boredom and gets stagnated to the point of monotony, a factor highly prone to bringing miseries which only get multiplied with the passage of time. Miseries so cropping up are nothing but man made only which otherwise can be taken care of simply by applying a small amount of will to work, take some initiative, move just a step further mildly straining the mental nerves to pursue that there is always a better alternative available to any instant situation.

It is not just like talking about weather when there is no topic available for discussion, it is the very weather that obtains currently making me talk about it. Literary giant Vishnu Prabhakar is no more !

Dayal was his original name given by the family but he became Vishnu Prabhakar after he acquired degree of Prabhakar in Hindi. The highest recognition offered to him was 'Padma Vibhushan'. Aged 97, he initially responded well to medical treatment but his condition deteriorated and he breathed his last in the hospital on Friday the 10th April. His was a household name in literary areas after he wrote 'Awara Masiha'. He wrote number of books including a biography on Sharad Chand but 'Awara Masiha' was his masterpiece. The story, the cult, the style adopted in 'Awara Masiha' became a routine background for others particularly those in film making but when it was written it was just a novelty and every inch original, more so as it was iconoclastic in the sense that it touched and dealt with the areas of human behaviour which till then were considered as socially forbidden laden with a reaction of disdain. Vishnu Prabhakar was a pace setter in that sense bold as he was in bringing out the real manifestation of human sentiments. His death is a colossal loss to Hindi literature but his 'Awara Masiha' alone is capable of retaining his memory in people's mind for centuries to come.

When clicked it was found that hardly a few branches were available for selection as against the very message as if it could be applicable to any choice office of any bank.. There are several companies forcing their snapshot ads on different web sites in a silky language boasting high of their product alluring the visitors in so many ways and finally after surfing pages after pages it reaches no where or only to a point of nullity utility wise. Ads ok but inflating them to unduly allure the customers in unreal terms is some thing that needs to be restrained in public interest.

Only a few months back it was imaginably difficult to visualize that the level of inflation may ever go as down as 0.26 per cent.
